James Anthony is California's leading land use attorney for medical cannabis issues, and a licensed real estate broker. He is a graduate of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School of Law at the University of California at Davis (King Hall). As a zoning prosecutor for the city of Oakland, he developed deep expertise and close connections in local government. In private practice, he built an unequaled record of success in medical cannabis permitting, lobbying, regulation and litigation throughout the state - including LA, Riverside County, Kern County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco and Oakland.
James is an accomplished political strategist, whose victories include the passage of Measure JJ in Berkeley; Oakland's historic cannabis tax; and obtaining Mayor Ron Dellums' support for Congressional DEA oversight hearings. He currently serves as chairperson of the City of Oakland Measure Z Oversight Committee; and sits on the Boards of Directors of non-profits, including Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, Green Aid, and the Pacific Zen Institute.
James is a frequent speaker and writer on medical cannabis regulatory issues, campaign strategy, and public relations.
Lauren Vazquez graduated from Santa Clara University's School of Law in May 2009 and was admitted to the California State Bar in December of 2009. She is currently an associate attorney at the Law Offices of James Anthony and a legal researcher for the medical cannabis consulting group CannBe.
Lauren has a long and successful history of activism promoting cannabis law reform. In 2004 she restarted the UC Santa Barbara chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). The chapter quickly grew to become one of the most popular campus organizations and most active chapters of NORML. Lauren also helped lead the campaign for Measure P, Santa Barbara's Lowest Police Priority Ordinance. For her efforts, NORML named Lauren 2006 Student Activist of the Year.
During law school Lauren studied with leading attorney and medical cannabis advocate Gerald Uelmen. She also continued her activism efforts as President of the SCU Law chapter of the ACLU and Co-chair of the Public Interest Social Justice Coalition. The law school recognized her dedication to civil rights with the Social Justice Service Award.
Lauren is currently Director of the Silicon Valley Chapter of Americans for Safe Access (ASA). In this position she is leading the effort to bring responsible regulations to the South Bay including San Jose, Mountain View, and Sunnyvale.
